If you’ve found us at a market or stopped by our table somewhere and picked up a sheet of stickers inspired by Our (un)Expected King, this post is for you.
Of course, children can simply enjoy the stickers however they’d like. But they can also become a tool for retelling the story. As children place the stickers, parents and other grown-ups can guide conversations about important moments in the book - who was where, what happened, and why certain places and details matter.
One creative way to extend their use is by turning the stickers into nativity scene blocks for playing and retelling the story over and over again.
Small blocks of wood
Mod Podge (or a similar craft adhesive/sealant)
A brush for applying the sealant
Supplies to protect your workspace
Please note: the materials and tools for this activity are not provided by us, and we cannot guarantee individual results or outcomes.
I used wooden blocks I already had on hand, but it may work best to size your wood pieces ahead of time to fit the stickers you plan to use. If the stickers are larger than the blocks, you can always allow the edges to hang over slightly.
Place the stickers onto the wood blocks first. Then apply a layer of Mod Podge or sealant over the sticker and block surface. Be sure to allow each side to dry thoroughly before turning or stacking them. The sealant can cause blocks to stick to surfaces (or to each other) if they are moved too soon.
You may want to apply several layers until you are satisfied with the coverage and durability.
Once finished, your children can use the blocks for storytelling and play - not only during Christmas, but all year long.
How many scenes from Our (un)Expected King can your child recreate?
